What is the trade deadline?

The trade deadline is the final point in the season when clubs can complete trades involving players on 40-man rosters. Contenders may add help while clubs looking ahead may seek younger players and prospects.

Since 2019, August waiver trades have been eliminated. In-season player trades must be completed by this single deadline.

Starting in 2026, the Commissioner sets the deadline each year between July 28 and August 3. In 2026, it falls on August 3 in the U.S.

After the deadline, player trades are not allowed, but free-agent signings and waiver claims remain possible.

Posting from an NPB club to MLB and free-agent moves after a contract expires are different mechanisms from a trade between clubs.
