About Blue Unicorn

Blue Unicorn — Japanese MLB Players Data Hub

Our Mission

For fans who love the player, not just the team — if you follow Shohei Ohtani because he's Shohei Ohtani, this site is for you. Blue Unicorn aggregates Statcast, FanGraphs-style metrics, and game reports so you never need to tab between five different sites to follow your favorite player.

Why Follow Japanese MLB Players?

For millions of fans across Japan and beyond, the story of Japanese players in MLB is one of the most compelling narratives in modern sports. Here are five reasons they deserve your attention:

  • 01Historic dual greatness — Shohei Ohtani is the first player in MLB history to compete at an elite level as both a pitcher and a designated hitter in the same season, rewriting the record books each year.
  • 02A wave of elite talent — 14 Japanese players are currently active in MLB, the most in history. From Yoshinobu Yamamoto's precision pitching to Roki Sasaki's late-breaking splitter, every season brings new storylines.
  • 03Data that rewards deep reading — Japanese players consistently rank among the most analytically interesting. Ohtani's Statcast profile is unlike any player in the history of the sport.
  • 04A distinctive style — Players who excelled in Japan's NPB often bring refined plate discipline, off-speed mastery, and situational hitting that surprises MLB hitters and analysts alike.
  • 05A global fan community — Japanese baseball fans are some of the most passionate in the world, and Blue Unicorn exists to bring those fans and their stories together.

Three Content Areas

Blue Unicorn organizes content into three areas: Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers, and Japanese MLB Players.

Two AI Characters

Blue Unicorn has two AI characters with clearly distinct roles.

CHARACTER 01
Ken-chan
Emotion & Storytelling

A 50-something salaryman baseball fan. Writes passionate Dodgers game reports from a fan's perspective — emotion over statistics. Pages: Game Reports.

CHARACTER 02
Unico
Data & Analysis

A 30-something data analyst type. Coldly breaks down pitch data, splits, and Statcast metrics after each game. Pages: Today's Player.

Update Policy

Game data is updated automatically within 30 minutes after each game. Reports are generated within 1–2 hours. Major feature changes are guided by user feedback and search data — always with the mission of getting you your player's results as fast as possible.

Data Sources

All game, at-bat, and pitch data comes from the official MLB Stats API. Every Shohei Ohtani at-bat is recorded pitch-by-pitch. Stats are updated within 30 minutes after each game ends.

How We Collect Data

All data on this site flows through a three-step pipeline that runs automatically after every game:

01Game ingestion — Within 30 minutes of a game ending, our server polls the MLB Stats API for pitch-by-pitch data. Every at-bat is stored with outcome, count, pitch type, and velocity.
02Statcast enrichment — The next day, we fetch xBA, xwOBA, exit velocity, launch angle, and barrel classification from Baseball Savant and link them to each at-bat record.
03AI narrative generation — Claude (Anthropic) reads the structured data and writes Ken-chan's game reports and Unico's per-game analysis. Statistical values are never AI-generated — they come directly from the APIs.

Sources Cited

Statistical data on this site is sourced exclusively from two official MLB data providers:

  • MLB Stats API (statsapi.mlb.com) — Official game, at-bat, and pitch-by-pitch records for all MLB games.
  • Baseball Savant (baseballsavant.mlb.com) — Statcast tracking data including exit velocity, launch angle, spin rate, and expected stats (xBA, xwOBA).

Sabermetric benchmark values (wRC+, FIP, WAR) follow conventions established in baseball analytics research. AI-generated content (game reports, player analysis) is clearly labeled throughout the site.
