Shohei Crushes a Leadoff Homer in an Epic Battle Against deGrom
A leadoff home run in the first inning set the tone! Shohei was so feared that deGrom intentionally walked him twice. The team took the loss, but Shohei's presence was absolutely dominant.
Highlights
- Shohei Ohtani crushes a leadoff home run in the 1st inning (108.3 mph exit velo, 374 ft)
- Dominates deGrom with a walk and an intentional walk in back-to-back plate appearances, showing overwhelming presence
- Kyle Tucker's RBI single in the 7th sparks a rally that briefly cuts the deficit to one run
Shohei Blasted One Right Out of the Gate!
Oh man, I was screaming from the very first inning. He jumped on deGrom's 97 mph fastball on the first pitch and crushed it. Exit velo 108 mph, 374 feet. I literally jumped off my couch watching on TV. I was like, "This game is OURS!" ...well, that's what I thought anyway.
The Man That Even deGrom Fears: Shohei Ohtani
His at-bat in the 3rd was beautiful too. Battled to a full count and drew a walk. He fouled off a 98 mph heater and then laid off a slider to finish it. That's what makes Shohei special — he can do that against deGrom of all people.
Then in the 5th? Intentional walk. Two outs, runner on second, and they flat-out refused to pitch to him. I mean, after giving up a homer in the first and walking him in the third, I get it. But think about what that means — THE Jacob deGrom basically waved the white flag and said, "I don't want any part of this guy." As a fan, that makes me so damn proud.
The Game Slipped Away... Ugh
We were up 1-0, but then Evan Carter tied it with a solo shot in the 3rd, and Josh Smith followed up with an RBI hit to put them ahead. That one stung. In the 6th, Nimmo tacked on another run on a grounder to make it 1-3.
In the 7th, Tucker roped an RBI hit and I was like, "HERE WE GO!" But Shohei popped one up — 74 mph exit velo, so he got jammed a bit. With runners on base it was a tough break, but hey, their pitchers were battling too.
Then in the 8th, Nimmo got ANOTHER RBI hit to make it 2-4. This Nimmo guy had 2 RBI on the day... gotta tip your cap.
A Tough Strikeout to End It, But Still...
Bottom of the 9th, down three, Shohei came up but chased a changeup. It was a nasty pitch on the corner though — can't blame him for that one.
But look at the big picture: Shohei went 5 plate appearances with a home run, 2 walks (one intentional). That's a .600 OBP on the day. The team lost, but Shohei absolutely WON his battle against deGrom.
We'll bounce back tomorrow. Days like this are exactly why you can't quit baseball.
