Matsui tosses a clean scoreless inning, no walks, extending his dominant run

Yu Matsui turned in another clean outing against the Yankees, working a scoreless inning on just one hit, one strikeout, and zero walks. It was an efficient, low-stress appearance that lines up perfectly with the dominant season he has put together — a 1.95 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 3-1 record across 44 appearances.

Zooming out to his last ten outings tells an even more impressive story: since August 15, Matsui has posted scoreless innings in eight of nine appearances, allowing just four hits while racking up 13 strikeouts over that stretch. That stretch of command is actually a notch above his already strong season-long numbers, and it shows a reliever who is trusting his stuff in high-leverage spots down the stretch. The other number worth flagging is his platoon split. Right-handed hitters are batting .198 against him with a .705 OPS and four home runs allowed, while left-handed hitters are managing just a .140 average and a .488 OPS, with only two homers surrendered and 35 strikeouts recorded. That gap is significant — Matsui's left-handed arm angle and cross-body delivery clearly give same-side hitters a much tougher look than they give right-handers.

As long as he keeps attacking the zone without issuing free passes, the way he did today, there's real room for that 1.95 ERA to come down even further before the season wraps up. The one thing worth watching going forward is how he handles right-handed power bats, since that four-homer number against righties is the one soft spot in an otherwise dominant profile.
