Masataka Yoshida is from Fukui Prefecture. After Tsuruga Kehi High School and an independent-league stint with BC Toyama before enrolling at Ritsumeikan University, he was drafted first overall by the Orix Buffaloes in 2015 — an unusual path even by Japanese baseball standards. He reached the NPB roster quickly, becoming a full-time starter by 2018 (.321 average).
