Okamoto walks but goes hitless again — platoon splits hint at a quick rebound

Okamoto went 0-for-1 with a walk and no strikeouts today. While he didn't pick up a hit, drawing a walk and avoiding a strikeout is not a bad process outcome. His season line sits at a .232 average with a .753 OPS, and a single plate appearance like this won't move those numbers much — though going hitless in two straight games is worth keeping an eye on.

Looking back over his last ten games, Okamoto broke out with a 4-for-5 effort against Kansas City on September 6th, only to go hitless the following two games — 0-for-4 on September 7th, and now today. Across that ten-game stretch he's 9-for-34, a .265 clip that's still running ahead of his .232 season average, but the swing between hot and cold stretches stands out. Even more telling is his platoon split this season: he's hitting just .224 with a .714 OPS against right-handed pitching, versus .250 with an .831 OPS against left-handers — a gap of more than 100 OPS points. That platoon strength looks like the real engine behind his hot streaks, including the home runs he hit on August 29th and 31st.

As for my read on this, the thing to watch going forward is the handedness of Oakland's next starters. He's still drawing walks, which suggests his strike-zone judgment hasn't slipped, so if a left-hander turns up in the rotation, don't be surprised if his numbers snap back quickly.
